Frequently Asked Questions
Are your standard packages all you offer?
Definitely not. These are meant to provide a framework for what I can provide at various price levels. If you are looking for something specific that you don't see, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Are you insured?
Yes, I am fully insured. Some wedding venues require proof of liability coverage. If this is the case with your venue, let me know and I can have my insurance company fax them a copy.
Do you provide "digital negatives"?
The short answer is yes. As part of my standard packages I provide "medium" resolution JPEG images which are suitable for printing up to 5x7. At additional cost I do provide the full resolution JPEG files of all final proofs. These will be stored off-site and held in escrow for 1 year. After 1 year, the full resolution images will be delivered to you.
If you've done some research you may know that this is a touchy subject for photographers. A lot of photographers will not provide full resolution images. When I got married, my wife and I took some time to decide what prints and album pictures we wanted and by that time our photographer had disappeared from the face of the earth. All we have is a book of proofs. That shouldn't happen to anyone which is why I do provide the full resolution images after 1 year.
I do not, however, provide the raw files from the camera. All my images that go to clients are retouched in some way. Often there is quite a bit of processing involved. Raw files do not reflect the final look of my images and therefore I do not make them available.
Will you shoot my wedding and give me a CD of images?
No, this is not something I do. There are a lot of people paying for their hobby by advertising on Craigslist and shooting a wedding cheaply and just giving a CD of images. As I mentioned in the prevous response, all I have from my own wedding is a book of cheaply printed proofs. That's not what I want to provide. I believe large prints and custom albums should be part of a wedding package. If you're looking for just a CD of images, you have a lot of other options.
Can you shoot the rehearsal?
Yes. I like to do this since it gives me a chance to scout the wedding location, talk to the officiant, and get a feel for how the wedding will proceed.
Can you provide multiple photographers?
I currently work alone. This may change in the future, but for now all packages include me as the single photographer.
Are you available for destination weddings?
Yes. If you've looked through the galleries (or at the top of any of my web pages), you'll see a wedding I shot in Hawaii. That was a lot of fun and if my schedule permits I would love to do more.
What equipment do you have?
I get this question for 2 reasons. The first, and most important, is that you should never hire a photographer who plans on bringing a single camera to your wedding. You're one accident or malfunction away from having no images of a once in a lifetime event. So to answer the question from this perspective, I bring at least 3 cameras to an event. I have 2 Canon digital SLRs as well as a film SLR which I use as extreme backup. Unless there's a real catastrophy, you will have images from your wedding.
The second reason I get this question is that with the advances in digital photography, there are many people interested in it as a hobby and are also curious if I'm using the best equipment. Best can always be argued, but the short answer is yes. I use all Canon cameras (5D and 1DMkIII for digital). I also use top of the line Canon L lenses. I also have some Profoto studio lighting which I can use for the formal and posed images. The best equipment won't make the best images on their own but they certainly do help provide a higher level of quality in the right hands.
